The Wikipedia article really takes you back into the early beginnings and basics of viral marketing. In the past, and in the present, companies pump billions into advertising, while viral marketing can substantially lower the costs for the companies. The companies have too many benefits when it comes to this viral marketing. Lower costs yes, but more influence; all it takes is that one you-tuber to use your product for you to have a whole new customer base. Facebook has turned viral marketing into a new gateway to reach people. Companies will compete stop at nothing to reach the over 1 billion active users on Facebook, which you can't blame them for; it is the right business move to want to sell more product, and the best way in this social media age is through viral marketing.
