Nostalgia hit me in the face after I read I Once Was Miss America. I agreed with her points that no matter how something in the present can try to change something, in this case her favorite book, you have that certain memory of it that you cannot change and that no one can change for you. Nostalgia is a thing of beauty when it comes to that. Each person has their own thing or things in the past that their minds go to when they see an old book or favorite family restaurant. No person has the same memory or the same connection to an object or an idea. That’s the wonderful thing about nostalgia, it is unique for everyone. Another point I liked was the fact that Gay tried so hard to fit in, which everyone can agree they have tried doing at one point or another. The fact is she tried so hard to fit in, but they still didn’t accept her, which I thought was funny. Not funny in the haha way, but funny in the amazement sort. You can try to be someone you are not and turn out losing what you were trying to accomplish, but you can be who are and what’s the worst that can happen, they reject you? Well at least you were true to yourself, you can’t ask for much more than that.
